Week 2 : Ferry from Vlore, Albania to Brindisi, Italy

Southern Italy has been a welcomed change for us. The hot sun here competes with a consistent south wind at our backs. Straight west across the Adriatic Sea from Vlore, we arrived after a six hour ferry ride to the small Italian port city of Brindisi. By seven o'clock, we were sitting on a bench in a circular fountain square along a bustling pedestrian axis between the port and the train station. We enjoyed a baguette, sliced cheese and prociutto with pesto sauce as a spread. It was an abrupt change from the very friendly but nationally immodern Albania, and we had discussed what this change in route was going to bring us. With the mountains of Albania as a measure, and the European Alps well in our minds, we rode 384 miles over four days to take the train from Barletta, near Foggia to Venice.
